Georgia Governor Nathan Deal and 2014 Georgia Teacher of the Year Jemelleh Coes
will speak at the 2014 undergraduate and graduate commencement ceremonies,
respectively, according to a news release from GSU.
Gov. Deal will be the featured speaker at the undergraduate ceremony Saturday,
May 10, at 9 a.m. at Allen E. Paulson Stadium.
Gov. Deal, a native of Sandersville, has served as Georgia’s 82nd governor since
January of 2011. Before he became a member of Congress, Gov. Deal served in the
U.S. Army at Fort Gordon in Augusta.
Gov. Deal graduated from Mercer University with a degree in law, and then opened
his own private law practice in Gainesville, according to the news release.
Coes is an alumna of GSU and will speak during the commencement ceremony for
graduate students Friday, May 9, at 1 p.m. at Hanner Fieldhouse.
Coes has taught at Langston Chapel Middle School for six years as a special
education English language arts teacher.
According to the news release, long with being named the Georgia Teacher of the
Year, Coes is a consultant for the Georgia Professional Standards Commission,
a member of the Department of Education Teacher Advisory Board, a Georgia
Partnership of Excellence in Education board member and was appointed to
Georgia’s Network for Transforming Educator Preparation Advisory Council.
