STATESBORO — Registration is open for Georgia Southern University’s intramural wheelchair basketball, with registration closing on Jan. 21.

Wheelchair basketball is the only free intramural offered this semester for students, faculty and staff, according to Brian Veverka, intramural sports and club sports program director at Campus Recreation and Intramurals (CRI).

This is the thirteenth year of wheelchair basketball as an intramural sport at GS. Veverka has been working with wheelchair basketball intramurals for three years.

“It’s a great environment to just be inclusive for those who are using a wheelchair and those who are not using a wheelchair just to give them an opportunity,” Veverka said.

Wheelchair basketball is similar to regular basketball with some exceptions regarding fouls and dribbling. The chair is considered part of your body, according to the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation. This adds different rules on fouls and being out of bounds as well.

In the past, there were normally 10 to 15 teams in a season with three to five players on each, Veverka said.

“[This] gives an opportunity for students to come out and have some fun and try something different,” Veverka said.

A representative from each team is required to meet on Jan. 22 for a mandatory meeting at the Recreation Activity Center. If you are interested in signing up for this intramural sport or want to know more about it, you can visit the intramural sports page here.
