GSU announces spring commencement speakers

Georgia Southern University selected physicist Michio Kaku and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commissioner Luis Aguilar as the 2013 spring commencement speakers.

Kaku is scheduled to speak at Hanner Fieldhouse on Friday, May 10 at 1 p.m. for the graduate commencement ceremony, and Aguilar is to speak at the undergraduate ceremony at Paulson Stadium on Saturday, May 11 at 9 a.m., according to the news release.

Commissioner Aguilar, a 1967 graduate of GSU, oversees the country’s financial markets and has been in the position since President George W. Bush appointed him there in 2008. President Barack Obama reappointed Aguilar to the position in 2011, according to the news release.

“I believe my education initially prepared me for new situations and gave me the confidence that I will know the critical questions to ask,” Luis said according to the news release.

Kaku is considered to be an expert in utilizing research to predict trends that will affect business, commerce and finance. He is a “New York Times” best-selling author and has made hosting appearances on documentaries featured on the Discovery Channel, the Science Channel and BBC-TV, according to the news release.
