Paladins pull out the rubber match

Unearned runs led to an unearned victory for the Furman University Paladins as the team knocked off Georgia Southern University’s softball team 3-2.

Sophomore pitcher Brooke Red gave up the first run of the game on a single to shallow centerfield to Furman freshman infielder Sieara Bishop.

Down by a run in the bottom of the sixth inning junior shortstop Kourtny Thomas stepped to the plate against Furman freshman pitcher Meaghan Houston.

Thomas sent Houston’s offer over the left field fence to tie the game at 1-1. For the second straight game GSU found itself in a bases loaded jam with the game on the line.

This time junior pitcher Sarah Purvis was on in relief in the top of the eighth inning. Purvis could not find the zone and she ended up hitting two batters. Those two runs would turn out to be the difference.

A double header with Mercer University on Wednesday starting at 3 p.m. could be just what the Eagles need to get the bad taste of two straight home losses out of their mouths.
