GSU picked fifth; two Eagles named All-SoCon

The Georgia Southern University baseball team was picked fifth in both preseason polls announced by the Southern Conference office Thursday.

The Eagles tallied 64 points in the Coaches Poll and 142 in the Media Poll after finishing the 2012 season as a SoCon Tournament Finalist, finishing with a 33-27 overall record and a split 15-15 conference record.

Elon University was named the preseason favorite by the league’s 11 coaches while the media selected College of Charleston as their favorite.

GSU also had two student-athletes named to the Preseason All-Conference team. Reigning Freshman of the Year, sophomore catcher Chase Griffin and senior outfielder Scooter Williams were selected to the Second Team.

Griffin led the team last season with 10 home runs and hit .320/.404/.533 during his freshman season Williams is coming off the best season of his career after hitting .290 with 56 runs scored. 12 doubles and 22 stolen bases in 60 starts last season.

Less than one week remains before the season opener against the University of Georgia.
