The Georgia Southern University volleyball team started a four-game homestand last night with a tough victory over the Western Carolina University Catamounts.

The Eagles extended its winning streak to nine games and improved its record to 21-6 overall (12-1 SoCon). WCU fell to 8-21 overall (4-10 SoCon) but challenged the Eagles from the start and made things difficult.

WCU took the first two sets from GSU 25-23 and 25-18 and seemed primed for an upset. However, GSU was able to regroup, make adjustments and take the last three sets 25-20, 25-15, and 15-8.

WCU sophomore outside hitter Caitlin Piechota presented problems for the Eagles in the first two sets with her strong play (14 kills, 14 digs) but was quieted as the match went on.

The GSU comeback was powered by the play of senior outside hitter Meredith Paskert (19 kills, 8 digs) and sophomore middle blocker Kym Coley (15 kills, 2 digs).

The Eagles will continue their homestand and look to stretch the winning streak to 10 games tomorrow against the Davidson College Wildcats.
