GSU defeats UNCG, advances to semifinals

Georgia Southern University’s volleyball team advanced to the semifinals of the SoCon tournament after a 3-1 victory over the University of North Carolina at Greensboro today.

The Eagles entered the match as the one-seed of the South Division and were pitted against the Spartans, who were the four-seed of the North Division.

UNCG captured the first set 25-19 after a kill from senior blocker Morgan Freeman. Freeman had five kills in the opening set and finished the match with 10 kills.

GSU fell behind 7-1 in the second set before head coach Chad Callihan called a timeout to regroup his team. GSU responded and got back into the set, but UNCG would not go away. With the second set tied 19-19, the Eagles went on a 6-2 run to win 25-21 behind some great plays by junior outside hitter Nicole Jeschelnick.

Throughout the season, the Eagles have shown an ability to buckle down and focus after slow starts. This trend would hold true in this match as well as GSU won the third and fourth sets 25-15, and 25-16.

Senior outside hitter Moriah Bellissimo had 16 kills and 11 digs. Jeschelnick added 13 kills and 12 digs.

The Eagles will move on to play Furman University on tomorrow.
