Preseason football position preview: Special Teams

Kaitlin Sells

The George-Anne will be previewing each position group leading up to the start of Georgia Southern football season, Aug. 31. Next in the series of previews is special teams.

Long Snapper

Departed: None.

Returning starter: Ryan Langan, junior.

Other returning players: Logan Cox, redshirt-sophomore; Payton Dunagan, redshirt-freshman.

New players: None.

Outlook: No new players, no departed players- the position of long snapper is locked as returning starter Ryan Langan is back for his third season as an Eagle.

Last season Langan handled every punt, field goal, and PAT snap as he was on the field for 128 snaps. Langan also logged one tackle in the 2018 season.

Neither Cox or Dunagan have seen any playing time, but Cox has had time under his belt as this is his second eligible season for the Eagles.

Projected two deep:

Ryan Langan (6-foot-1, 230 pounds)

Logan Cox (6-foot, 230 pounds)

Place Kicker

Departed: Jake Karesh

Returning starter: Tyler Bass, redshirt-senior.

Other returning players: None.

New players: Alex Raynor, freshman.

Outlook: This being Tyler Bass’s last season there’s no question that he’s going to be the one to step up this season for the Eagles.

Bass has been a solid player for the Eagles, going 19-21 on field goals and 45-45 on PATs last season. Most memorable, he kicked the last-second game-winning field goal to claim the school’s second bowl win. Bass received multiple awards after his impressive season such as All-Sun Belt Conference First team, AP All-Bowl Team, All-American Second Team- just to name a few.

While listed as a punter on the roster, redshirt-freshman Bryce Christensen saw some action kicking during the team scrimmage Aug. 17 where he notched a 21-yard field goal and three PATs.

Projected two deep:

Tyler Bass (5-foot-10, 185 pounds)

Bryce Christensen (5-foot-11, 190 pounds)

Punter

Departed: None.

Returning starter: Magill Bauerle, redshirt-junior.

Other returning players: Anthony Beck II, redshirt-freshman; Bryce Christensen, redshirt-freshman.

New players: Kevin Jones, freshman.

Outlook: With none lost, the Eagles should be set when it comes to the punting position. Starter Magill Bauerle will be returning to the field this season after playing in all 13 games last season. The redshirt-junior punted 57 times, averaging 38.6 yards per kick. Bauerle also help all 66 PAT’s and field goals for Bass.

Another to look out for returning to the field as a redshirt-freshman for his first season of eligibility is Anthony Beck II. Beck was redshirted for the 2018 season, but shows an impressive high school record as he holds every school record for punting. Beck saw a lot of playing time in the scrimmage Aug. 17, so it would not be surprising to see him on the field this season.

Projected two deep:

Magill Bauerle (6-foot-1, 200 pounds)

Anthony Beck II (6-foot-4, 230 pounds)
