Preseason football position preview: Quarterback

Kaitlin Sells

The George-Anne will be previewing each position groups leading up to the start of Georgia Southern football season, Aug. 31. The first in the series of reviews is the position of the quarterback.

Departed: LaBaron Anthony, Kado Brown, Ivan Corbin Jr., Jaden Jenkins

Returning starter: Shai Werts, redshirt-junior.

Other returning players: Jaalon Frazier, redshirt-sophomore; Justin Tomlin, redshirt-freshman.

Outlook: Werts has already made a name for himself on the field for the Eagles, this season is just another opportunity to show he knows how to lead his offense.

He was redshirted the 2016 season and made his first college playing debut against Auburn University in 2017. He started off rocky as he only rushed for 24 total yards against AU, but swiftly adapted to the position as he finished the 2017 season with 927 passing yards and 722 rushing yards.

The two-year started had another successful season following in 2018, ending on a high after his incredible fourth down conversion where he rushed 29 yards on a 4th and 10 in the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl. That conversion put the Eagles inside field goal range, allowing redshirt-senior kicker Tyler Bass to come in and seal the win for GS.

Overall, Werts rushed a total of 908 yards on the 2018 season as well as passing for 987 yards. The now redshirt-junior also collected 15 rushing touchdowns last season.

Neither Frazier or Tomlin have seen any significant time in the previous seasons, but Tomlin saw a good amount of playing time in the second scrimmage of the preseason. The redshirt-freshman rushed for one touchdown as well as notching a 65-yard run.

Projected two deep:

Shai Werts (5-foot-11, 205 pounds)

Justin Tomlin (5-foot-11, 190 pounds)
