The Empty Bowl Project is here at the Russell Union Rotunda today until 1 p.m. The bowls are $10 a piece which includes the bowl and chili.

All proceeds go to the Statesboro Food Bank to help those in need. Jeff Schumki, a professor of ceramics in the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art here at Georgia Southern, has been apart of this project for 2 and half years now, but The Empty Bowl has been around for 8 years. It’s a nation wide event that helps those that are less fortunate.

“Students learn to value and create an object that helps with their community. They realize they have the power to create positive change. Once they graduate, then they will continue to give back because they’ve already been apart of something that is meaningful,” Schumki said.

[su_quote]”This is a natural thing to do. People are happy to support it. It’s a big event here that people look forward to each year. There isn’t any reason why students should be going hungry. We have a responsibility to help them.”[/su_quote] A majority of the bowls are crafted by students during class and in their own time. There are also members of the community who do create these bowls as well. Stop by to get either meat or veggie chili and a uniquely crafted bowl.
