The final play of the semester from the Center for Art and Theatre is tonight at 7:30 in the Black Box Theatre.

Nicholas Newell is the director of “Mountaintop” which is an American play originally written by Katori Hall. It is a fictional account of the last night of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., before his assassination on April 4, 1968. Dr. King returns to his Lorraine Motel room after delivering his “I’ve been to the Mountaintop” speech in Memphis Tennessee.

The “I’ve been to the Mountaintop” speech was primarily about the Memphis Sanitation Strike and addressed the topics of unity and nonviolent.

The play is completely set in his motel room. When Dr. King receives room service from a young woman, he is forced to reflect on his life and past actions. Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett starred in the broadway version of the play.

The play costs $5 plus tax for students and $10 for non-students.
