The Pirates had a big game against the Brewton-Parker Barons Wednesday, Sept. 16, and the Pirates came out victorious. It was “Pack the Stands” night, which was a big success as 538 students and fans turned out for the game.

A large factor in this record-setting turnout was the free tailgate organized by the Campus Union Board and the Student Government Association.

“Everybody loves food, of course. I know that this game runs into times with the Galley, so this would also be a good time for everyone to get something free to eat,” CUB member, Deanne Bailey said.

SGA President, Matthias Downs, explained that the CUB and SGA teamed up for the event to aid student- athletes in getting their organizations recognized.

“The student athletic department wanted to involve CUB because they are in charge of generating interest in student activities, and SGA is an overarching portion of CUB,” Downs said.

Student banter was buzzing with high hopes for a win. The fans talked about the game itself and how tough the volleyball team is.

Kourtnei Zellner was sure that the Pirates were headed for victory, “Armstrong will win. The girls practice so hard each and every week. They are going to do great.”

Head volleyball coach Will Condon was pleased with all of his athletes and particularly impressed with juniors Anna McGee, Emily Wylie, and freshman Carley Eiken.

Coach Condon explained that Anna McGee hit .500, Emily Wylie made 11 kills at 360, and Carley Eiken did a really good job setting. Condon also talked about the team doing a better job on the court.

“We were scoring more points offensively and had 44 kills while they only had 9 total. Our offense did a better job than theirs tonight,” he said.

The Pirates won the game three sets to none with scores of 25-12, 25-8, and 25-11. On Saturday, Sept. 19, the Pirates beat Erskine 3-0 as well. The team now stands at 4-4 and will host Francis Marion for their season opener Friday, Sept. 26.
