Health and Wellness Fair scheduled for Oct. 7

By Marcus Hopper, Staff Writer

The Health and Wellness Fair is almost here! The fair will take place Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. This is the sixth Health and Wellness Fair hosted by the Armstrong Recreation Center.

The four-hour event will feature more than 50 health professionals from the Savannah area. The aim of the event is to forge healthy connections and educate the community on where they might find outlets for a healthy lifestyle. The fair will benefit those trying to find new dentists, optometrists, personal trainers, health food stores and community service opportunities.

Laura Schmarkey, who is in charge of the fair, says 54 professionals have been confirmed for this year’s fair.

“We want to promote overall wellness, not just yearly trips to the doctor and regular physical activity,” Schmarkey said. “We have vendors and professionals that can give you specialized info on anything wellness-related, from mental to physical.”

Professionals will also be on-site to perform screenings such as the preemptive skin screenings by the Georgia Skin & Cancer Clinic. Not just for students, this fair open to staff and faculty, as well as people in the Savannah community.

Mara DeMauro, another coordinator, explains, “We offer this as a community event, not just for students. We want to focus on overall wellness for the community.”

Attendees can expect raffle drawings, blood pressure readings, flexibility, strength and bone-density tests, free samples and more!
