Pirates plunder two more victories

The Armstrong Pirates defeated both the Georgia College Bobcats and the Augusta University Jaguars this past week, stretching their win streak to six straight games.

“We are a determined group of girls,” junior Anna McGee said. “We set our minds on something and we go get it. Every time we play, we respect our opponent. Nothing is taken lightly, but we trust our ability and teamwork. That’s our plan the rest of the season.”

Tuesday, Sept 29, the Pirates racked up an impressive thirteen service aces while the Bobcats were unable to muster one.

Freshman Raquel Kulak and junior Emily Wylie both pocketed ten kills each, opposed to the Bobcats’ Miller Howard scoring nine. Armstrong ultimately shut out the Bobcats as they won three sets by scores of 25-19, 25-18, and 25-17.

Saturday, Oct 3, the Pirates took the game against the Jaguars by winning three out of four sets. The first set was a struggle as the Pirates squeaked by in extra serves to win 28-26. The Pirates won the final two sets after dropping the second, 16-25.

McGee delivered a total of fifteen kills, narrowly beating Augusta University’s Kali Boatwright’s fourteen. Kulak hit at an incredible .500 with eight kills and six blocks.

Freshman Selene Ushela also gave another two outstanding performances this week, seizing twenty-four digs in total.

“I think this weekend was a good win for us,” junior Kayla Berns said. “Playing on the road always takes some getting used to, but despite the little adversity, we were able to pull through and continue our run in the conference. We’re definitely going to work hard this week though. With a few home matches, we are hoping to pull ahead by just focusing on playing our best.”

The Pirates are now 8-4 overall and 4-0 in Peach Belt Conference play. They took the court Wednesday, Oct 7 at home to face off against Flagler.  Next they will take on Montevallo and Columbus State at home this Friday, Oct 9 and Saturday, Oct 10.
