Pirates continue wins after record performance

The Armstrong Pirates volleyball came out strong against Columbus State Saturday, Oct 10, defeating them 3-1, to continue their winning streak of nine straight games. In a competitive win Wednesday, Oct 7 against Flagler, freshman Selene Ushela broke the school record for digs in a game as she had 41 on the night. This helped lead her team to a 3-2 win over the Lions.

“This win puts us 7-0 (in the Peach Belt Conference) and as a team we hope to continue that,” Ushela said. “We face Aiken and Lander next week and we are working to stay on top of those two games in order to be in a good position for regionals.”

The Pirates are almost an entirely new team. Several freshmen joined the team this year, but a clear bond exists between the team.

Junior Paige Gocke explained how this team has been able to overcome the number of freshman this year.

“I think we have a lot of potential this upcoming season,” she said. “It’s a new team and we are learning how to play with one another. I think we will keep growing together and making one another better. Our team goal is to win a national championship.”

The Pirates continue their season on the road next week. They take on PBC rival USC Aiken Wednesday, Oct 14 and Lander Saturday, Oct 17.
