Nine Armstrong seniors will exhibit their artwork in the “New Propaganda” show, in the Fine Arts Gallery from Nov. 9 through Nov. 30. A reception will be held Friday, Nov. 13 at 5.30 p.m. Each artist will briefly explain their work during the reception.
The featured artists are Gabriel Amadi-Emina, Gordon Chicowlas, Sheldon Elliott, Ashley Havy, Meghan Ramsay, Richelle Redwood, Stephanie Sanders, Chris Smalls and Shae Tenhouse. A variety of different mediums will be present including photography, graphic design, textiles, jewelry and painting.
Richelle Redwood said most of the work she will exhibit are recent pieces. As she has learned new techniques while at Armstrong, her work has evolved. “Learning new techniques changes my perspective,” she said.
The title for the exhibition is based on how propaganda is used to influence ideas and opinions. The word often has a negative connotation because propaganda can be seen as biased. This group of artists, however, want to give the word a positive meaning by sharing their own individual messages in an objective, open-minded way.
“The overall theme of my show is mannequins coming to life,” said Chris Smalls. He took photos of the mannequins in the Fine Arts drawing lab and digitally added hair and clothing to them.
The show will feature a mix of recent artwork and older pieces, created during the artist’s’ time at Armstrong to show how their styles have developed and evolved.
Gabriel Amadi- Emina said his artwork is different now than it has been in the past. “It’s me reinventing myself and my art style.”
“This show is a culmination of everything we’ve worked for while here,” wrote Gordon
Chicowlas. Not just in learning the fundamentals of art itself, but the fundamentals of who we are as artists.”
Shae Tenhouse said he will exhibit a poster series made with a minimal colors and geometric shapes. “I wanted to use as few colors and shapes as possible,” he said.
There will be door prizes during the reception and each artist will give away pieces from their portfolios, on show in the gallery, at the end of the reception. The reception is free and open to the public.
