Event: Course Reflection (OIE) – ARMSTRONG

Time: 10a.m.-11a.m.

Place: Solms Hall 211

Do you want to be able to provide strong evidence of teaching for use in annual reviews and tenure and promotion dossiers? Do you want to improve your instruction while simultaneously targeting students’ areas of weakness? In this workshop, you will be introduced to a course reflection. You will learn how to plan and craft instructional strategies to target student learning outcomes, collect and analyze information relevant to your student learning outcomes, and modify instructional strategies to target student learning. Please bring a copy of a syllabus for a course.

Event: Tailgate

Time: 4p.m.-6p.m.

Place: Residential Plaza

A (pre) Fan Fest Tailgate will feature free food and fun in a family-friendly atmosphere on Friday, August 24, 4-6 PM in the Residential Plaza (outside of the Student Union).  Take a tour of the Armstrong Campus, visit the bookstore for some new Eagle gear, and grab some goodies at our information tables. After the tailgate, head over to the soccer field to Meet the Eagles at Fan Fest. This event is free and open to the public.  All students, faculty, staff, and friends are welcome!

Event: Meet the Eagles Fan Fest

Time: 4p.m.-8p.m.

Place: Armstrong Soccer Field

Eagles Athletics fans will have the chance to meet this year’s football coaches and players in Savannah during the Meet the Eagles Fan Fest set for Friday, Aug. 24 on the Georgia Southern University Armstrong Campus. Activities for the community begin at 4 p.m., including a tailgate, campus tours and a meet-and-greet with the team. The event is free and open to the public. Festivities will kick off with a community tailgate at 4 p.m. at the Student Union. Campus tours will be given at 4:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. starting from the Student Union. At 6 p.m., the Eagles will hold their Friday practice at the soccer field on the Armstrong Campus with an autograph session to immediately follow. Fans may bring their own items to be autographed and free 2018 football posters will be provided. Photos may be taken, but selfies and posed photographs that hold up the line will not be permitted so that everyone can get their items signed in the allotted time. University Interim President Shelley C. Nickel will encourage Eagle Nation to share their True Blue pride while fans enjoy music from members of the Southern Pride Marching Band in addition to appearances by Georgia Southern cheerleaders and GUS. The festival will also be a great time for Savannah residents and students on the Armstrong Campus to learn football game day chants and traditions. For those interested in exploring admissions opportunities, University admissions representatives will be available and will be giving away rally towels, water bottles, croakies and more. Concessions sold through local food trucks will be available for the festival. Students and other fans can also enjoy inflatables and corn hole in the adjacent softball field. Free T-shirts will be provided to Georgia Southern students while they last. The Athletics Ticket Office will be on-site for those who want to purchase football season tickets, single-game tickets or away game tickets. Volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s basketball season tickets will also be available for purchase. However, football season ticket packets and Eagle Fund membership benefits will not be available for pick up at the festival Fan Fest. Junior Eagle Club Memberships will also be available to purchase. Parking is free and fans may park in the large Sports Center parking lot on campus.

Event: 2 Hour Paranormal Investigation

Time: 8:30p.m.

Place: 230 Barnard Street Savannah, GA. 31401

6th Sense World Ghost and Cemetery Tours are offering an opportunity to partake in a paranormal investigation in one of Savannah’s oldest mansions. It goes from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. every Friday from now until the end of September. Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Equipment will be provided but guests may also bring their own cameras. Cost of admission is $50.

Friday-Sunday, August 24-26

Event: “Mamma Mia!”

Time: 8-10:30 p.m.

Place: Savannah Theatre

The famous Broadway musical with songs by Abba can be seen at the Savannah Theatre on Bull St. Tickets are $37 plus tax.

Saturday, August 25

Event: Farmers’ Market

Time: 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Place: Forsyth Park

If you are new to the area and looking for a place where you can get local food products, there is a producer-only farmers’ market at the south end of Forsyth Park every Saturday morning. Many local food vendors sell their own fruits, vegetables, bread, coffee beans, and plants.

Event: 5 Secrets to Make College More Affordable

A free class offered by education service Class 101 to help parents and students alike in the process of how to pay for college. Show up early because seating is limited!

Event: Front Porch Improv: Improv Inferno

Time: 8 p.m.

Place: 2222 Bull St. Savannah GA 31401

Price: $10

Front Porch is presenting their monthly improv show, with this month’s theme being inferno. Come for a night full of laughs at Bull Street Labs as cast members attempt to act out scenes using your suggestions. The box office will open 30 minutes before showtime and audience members are encouraged not to show up any later than 10 minutes before the show. The show will start on time.

Event: Parks After Dark

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to see the beautiful Wormsloe Historic Site on night? Wormsloe is hosting an (almost) full moon hike just in time to see sunset and moonrise. The hike will start at the Visitors Center and is 3 miles long. There are a limited amount of spots available so if you are interested please call the park office at 912-353-3023.

Event: Lunchtime Arboretum Tour

Place: Lane Library, outside

Philip Schretter, grounds superintendent on the Armstrong Campus, will highlight late-summer blooming perennials on a lunchtime arboretum tour in addition to answering any questions about the Arboretum. The tour will begin in front of Lane Library on the Armstrong Campus. No registration necessary. This event will be rescheduled if inclement weather.

Event: Book Group: Teach Students How to Learn (Saundra McGuire)

Time: 2:30p.m.-3:45p.m.

Place: Solms Hall 207

Book Group: Teach Students How to Learn (Saundra McGuire). Facilitated by Lauren Barbeau and Nancy Remler (facilitated on both campuses simultaneously). Do you believe that students can learn more deeply and achieve more success than they do at present? Are you frustrated by unmotivated, disengaged students? Join this book discussion to discover strategies that will positively influence student learning in your classes. The author, Saundra McGuire, provides practical, research-based strategies to teach students how to learn. Mindset, Motivation, and Metacognition are key to deeper learning. Attendance is limited to 10 participants; by registering you commit to attending all group meetings. Each participant will receive a copy of the book at the first meeting.

The Volunteer Fair is designed to bring community organizations within the Savannah area who need volunteers to campus and allow students the opportunity to seek out volunteer opportunities.
