Student Employment Fair

By: Naima Thompson, Staff Writer

“We believe the job fair was a success”, said Student Employment Center HR Coordinator, Yolanda Hernandez as she helped pack up the last items on the student information table.

Brooke Okorley and Essence Flakes, both Respiratory Therapy majors in their junior year, both said they appreciated the variety of jobs offered at the fair.

“Lane Library stands out to me because of the work environment” said Essence, pointing at their table. I think it’s a good fit for me because I’m a quiet, detailed oriented person.

The job fair hosted both on and off-campus opportunities.  Some of the on-campus employers included T.R.I.O- Student Support Services, Parking and Transportation, Recreation and Wellness, Public Safety, and the Eagle Dining Central Office.

Some of the off-campus companies represented at the fair were Chick-fil-a, ESS (formally Source-4-Teachers), CarMax, Portman’s Music, and iHeartMedia.

“Students were very excited to see our company represented at the job fair,” said iHeart Radio Promotions Director, Kendra Gordon.

“A lot of students didn’t know our company was even in Savannah,” continued Gordon.  “They thought iHeart Radio only existed in larger areas like California and New York City.”

She thought that was funny because “iHeart Radio is everywhere.”

“We are looking for students who want to work hard and have fun.  We want students to enjoy what they are doing”, she said.

ESS Account Operations Manager, Helene Hunt said employment with her company is “very flexible.”

She said, “Working with our company, you don’t have to ask your boss for the day off. A student can go to school three days a week, and work with us for two days.”

ESS is currently looking for substitute teachers, paraprofessionals, food service personnel, custodians, nurses, and clerical staff.

Ms. Hernandez said their office plans to host two more job fairs in January and April of 2019.
