Unapproved signs were taken down at the RAC after they stirred a negative response from a patron Wednesday morning.

History professor Michelle Haberland said she received reports from several colleagues that signs espousing conservative values were posted around the RAC.

One sign featured the quote, “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money,” by former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

A similar sign with the quote, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing,” by Edmund Burke, remained posted behind the RAC circulatory desk.

Students like Katie Braid, senior computer engineering major, said she wouldn’t have been bothered by the signs.

“I don’t really see a problem with it,” Braid said. “If I had seen it, I probably would have glanced at it and kept going.”

The signs were ultimately taken down in order to maintain a positive environment for everyone, said Assistant Director of Campus Recreation and Intramurals Jeremy Wilburn.
