People throughout Statesboro were ecstatic at the sight of streets filling up with snow pillows for the first time since 2018.
GSU students left their warm dorms to walk, play, and enjoy Tuesday, January 21, 2025, snow day.
It was a truly wholesome moment to witness everyone out enjoying the icy cold weather along with their peers. From playful snow fights, building snowmen, and sledding down hills with friends, many students shared their excitement and experiences of this rare snow event.
Virginia Whitley
“Bliss” was the one word that summed up her snow day experiences.
Virginia Whitley, a graphic design major at Georgia Southern University, has lived in the Statesboro/ Claxton area most of her life. She was born in Virginia and describes how it snowed on her birthday. “I like to think it’s in my blood because snow is one of my absolute favorite things to experience”, she shares.
She spent the snowstorm night with her siblings and “felt like a little kid again” as she caught snowflakes with her tongue, went “sledding” with kayaks, and had snowball fights. Reminiscing old times and getting blinded by the bliss of it all, Virginia spent her evening doing “every possible thing you can cram into a snow day.”
Taya Sterkenburg
For Taya Sterkenburg, a freshman studying Information Technology at Georgia Southern University, the snow day was one of a kind because it was her first time seeing snow! As an international student from South Africa, she shares it was “cool to experience snow falling from the sky, and seeing everything covered in snow the next morning.” She describes her experience as being “new and exciting” enjoying the simple act of “walking around campus and seeing all the snowmen” people built. She got together with friends and went to the “GSU Golf Course and RAC fields and snowboarded down the hills”.
Exploring campus with friends and making the most out of it made her first experience an “Overall 10/10, even though it was freezing!”
Samira Gamero
“Exciting” was the one word that summed up her snowfall experience. Samira is an international student from Honduras studying Supply Chain Management. Although this wasn’t her first time experiencing snow, she savored the night as much as she could, sharing this special moment along her friends.
“I took pictures with my friends, had snowball fights , and walked around campus while it was still snowing .”
Daniela Robelo
One word that summed up her time in the snow was “Magical”.
As a foreign student from Honduras, Daniela, a Marketing major at Georgia Southern University, got to experience the essence of snow for the first time ever. She recalls her first encounter with snow as magical, watching in awe as pillows of snow gathered on the ground. “It was so much fun spending this snowy night with friends, having snowball fights, building snowman and taking cute pictures,” she shares.
The aftermath of the snowy night was costly for Daniela, although she brightly says “I have no regrets of going out and enjoying the snowy night.” You only live once.
Daniel Matute
Daniel, another supply chain management major from Honduras, describes his entire evening to be “Surreal”. He recalls,
“I was excited by the snow news, checking outside the window every couple of minutes. As soon as I saw snow I ran outside to enjoy the experience I was anxious about for so long.”
He spent the rest of the snowy night fully immersed in “the touch of snow and making the best out of the moment really.”
This ordinary winter day took an unexpected turn as it made students all over campus and at home, create cherishable memories surrounded by loved ones and friends in the rare Statesboro snow. Wishing you all a warm, safe, and productive weekend!
