Construction has been ongoing these past few months on the first floor of the Student Union at Armstrong, despite the most recent news that it was expected to be completed in the beginning of the spring semester.
The area was previously occupied with chairs, tables and microwaves for students to use.
The progress of the construction plans have been ongoing for more than a semester, leaving the completion date a mystery to students.
On the Statesboro campus, the Virtual Collaboration Center is known as a place where students can game with their friends, work on a school or personal project on the computers, or hang around and socialize.
Associate Vice President for Student Success Dr. Melanie Miller said there was a slight delay in construction getting started for Armstrong’s VCC, but it is expected to be completed before Spring Break.
Another change coming to the Student Union is the addition of an Information Desk, which will replace The Perk. According to Dr. Melanie Miller, this was not an initial aspect of their plans to remodel the Student Union.
Along with gaming consoles, the VCC will have technical equipment for e-sports teams to compete with other universities, according to Dr. Miller.
Gianna Edward, a second-year student majoring in health science said she thinks more people are going to get out and interact if they know the VCC is in the Student Union. She also said it feels like it will be a way to de-stress from her classes.
“It could be good to get students to know each other, those who normally wouldn’t interact with each other,” said Julia Beacham, a second-year student majoring in medical lab sciences. She also said it is going to promote collaboration and community.
Boaz, a music industry student said it would be a “good meeting place for people to actually interact and have fun together.”
An “official opening ceremony” for the VCC is expected to take place the first week of March.
