Swim lessons offered at the RAC

The Campus Recreation and Intramurals (CRI) Department offers swimming lessons and clinics on campus at the Recreation Activity Center (RAC).

The swim lessons are open to Georgia Southern students, faculty, staff and RAC members.

Georgia Southern University’s CRI Aquatics page states that all of the classes will be supervised by American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors.

There are three categories of swim clinics: non-swimmer, swimmer, and advanced.

Lessons for non-swimmers

The non-swimmer class is for those who are in need of basic swimming skills. The class will teach how to be comfortable in the water, how to float on your front and back, how to transition from a horizontal to vertical transition, basic arms strokes and basic kicking techniques.

Lessons for swimmers

The swimmer class is for those who are already comfortable in the water where your feet are able to touch the bottom. This class will teach how to breaststroke, backstroke, and front crawl. You will also learn how stay afloat in deep water, breathing techniques, and diving strokes.

Advanced Clinics

The advanced class is for those who are looking to learn proper techniques for a better workout or for competition. This class focuses on the breaststroke, backstroke, sidestroke, and backstroke. However, the butterfly strokes and flip turns can be taught in this class if desired.

Sadricka Thomas, senior fashion merchandise major, thinks the classes are a good idea.

“I don’t know how to swim and I feel that it’s a life -saving thing that everyone should know how to do,” Thomas said.

Kevin Brooks, junior business major, agrees with Thomas.

“It’s good that it gives those who don’t know how to swim the opportunity to gain the skills and those who do know how to swim will gain the skills to become better,” Brooks said.

Private lessons range in price from $12 to $104. Group sessions are twice a week for three weeks with the price of six sessions for $10.

Each preview class is free of charge.
