The debut of Georgia Southern’s 10th head coach is about to unfold. Tyson Summers, a Tifton, Ga. Native, has been preparing the Eagles for their opening matchup against Savannah State at home.

At 35 years old Summers is one of the youngest head coaches in college football, but that has not stopped him from impacting the Sun Belt from the start. According to ESPN, he has garnered the best recruiting class in the Sun Belt with a total of 27 signees for the 2016 class. 

Summers was the defensive backs coach at Presbyterian College and GS, a graduate assistant at Troy and Georgia, special teams coordinator at the University of Alabama-Birmingham and a defensive coordinator at the University of Central Florida. Athletic Director, Tom Kleinlein, saw the potential in Summers becoming the new head coach of the Eagles.

Summers wanted to come back to GS because it was the place where he developed a love for the game.

“Being able to come back here to a place where football is important and where culture is important. Those things are important to us. That’s why this all fit for me,” Summers said.

Summers is facing the challenge of coming into a program that has already won the Sun Belt conference championship. This gives him an idea on how he wants the program to be run and take the next step in success for the Eagles.

“We have to continue to have sustained success and how can we do that over a 10, 15, 20 year period of time. We’re trying to look at big picture goals, not necessarily short term,” Summers said.

Summers has what GS wants in a head coach. His first game is on Sept. 3 against Savannah State. This game will give Eagle Nation a glimpse of what the future holds for the team.
