Ferguson Offers an Alternative to Spring Break Parties

The town of Ferguson, MI is extending an invitation for college students to do something a little more serious than the average spring break trip.

According to the Guardian, activist leaders are looking to sign up 250 young people for a week of community service to help clean up and rebuild the town.

“Maybe there were some people who had planned to go down to Miami or Acapulco, and now see that there is something bigger,” Patricia Bynes, a Democratic committeewoman for Ferguson told The Guardian.

Organizers said that students would help with city improvement projects spanning from helping clear out burned out businesses to building gardens.

The Ferguson Alternative Spring Break is scheduled to run five, week-long sessions in March and April. Students who are interested will be expected to pay their own way to Ferguson. After arriving, accommodations, food and transportation during the program will be handled by group organizers for $100.
