Senior RF Aaron Mizell played a part in three of Georgia Southern’s four runs as the Eagles took down the Georgia Bulldogs 4-3 on Friday night.
GS was down 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning with two men on and two out when Mizell roped a 2-0 fastball to the right-center field warning track. Both runners scored and the Eagles took a 4-3 lead that they would not relinquish.
“He threw two fastballs, and [2-0] is a good fastball count,” Mizell said. “He threw it in there and today I hammered it.”
His double brought home freshman CF Logan Baldwin and senior LF Kody Adams.
Baldwin took a breaking ball off his foot and was then advanced to second by Adams’ single. Mizell ended the game going 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
He has struggled hitting the ball so far this season. He was glad to be able to contribute tonight.
“I’ve been working hard with our coaches to get back to the approach I need to be taking. Baseball’s a humbling game; you’re going to fail a lot. You’ve got to work through some struggles,” Mizell said.
Redshirt sophomore LHP Evan Challenger started the game and would have been in line for the win had the Eagle defense not given up so many free bases. GS had four errors and only one of UGA’s three runs was earned.
Hennon said after the game that in order to keep winning, his team needed to stop giving up so many easy bases. Defense has been an issue all season long for GS.
Challenger gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk while striking out three in 5.0 innings pitched.
His reliever, LHP Jason Richman, got his second win of the year. Richman pitched 2.0 innings and gave up his first run of the season, which was also unearned. A booted ball by senior SS Dalton Busby allowed a run to score in the top of the seventh.
That was the first run Richman gave up all season.
Sophomore 1B Ryan Cleveland swung the bat well tonight too. He was 2-4 with a double and a run scored.
Junior RHP Chris Brown tallied his third save this season.
The Eagles are back in action will senior RHP Tripp Sheppard on the mound tomorrow at 2 p.m. against the Bulldogs.
