Football season is in full swing and Georgia Southern is at the halfway point in their first FBS season.
The Eagles have a 5-2 record and an unblemished record in the Sun Belt Conference, coming in at 4-0.
Georgia Southern has always been known as a team with a high-powered offense, coming into this season with a dominant running game. At this point in the season the Eagles lead the nation in rushing, averaging 372 yards per game.
Redshirt sophomore Kevin Ellison is in his second season at the helm as the starting quarterback and has had a good season throwing for 687 yards along with rushing for 669 yards and a combined 12 touchdowns.
Along side him in the backfield is sophomore Matt Breida, who currently leads the team in rushing with 831 yards and 8 touchdowns. Breida has emerged as one of the Eagles most explosive players averaging 9.09 yards per touch
Georgia Southern is scoring points at an extremely high rate, averaging 41.3 points a game. In only one game have the Eagles not scored four touchdowns and that was the first against NC State, in which they lost in last-minute fashion 24-23.
While a bit overshadowed by the offense, the defense has quietly put together a solid first half of the season thanks in large part to the leadership throughout the defense.
Deion Stanley has solidified a successful first half of his senior campaign with a team high three interceptions and is tied for first in the conference.
Georgia Southern leads the conference with 10 interceptions and is middle of the pack in passing yards given up per game (242.4).
Edwin Jackson is on pace to have 100 tackles on the season which would set a career high for him. Currently he leads the team with 58 tackles, which is good enough for seventh in the conference.
While the record says 5-2, the pair of blemishes on the Eagles otherwise spotless season were by a combined score of five points. Georgia Southern is the first team to start off 4-0 in the Sun Belt in the team’s first season in the conference.
While the Eagles are the odds on favorite to win the Sun Belt Conference at this time it will be interesting to see how they continue as they face the back half of their schedule, in particular the Navy and UL-Monroe games.
