What You Need To Know: AI is the main culprit for academic dishonesty

According to Dr. Zwisel Gandia, Associate Dean of Student Conduct & Community Standards, there were 204 cases of academic dishonesty throughout the 2022-2023 academic year. Most of that comes from an increase in the misuse of AI.

“Every academic dishonesty case is different; however, academic dishonesty may include cheating, plagiarism, classroom copyright infringement amongst others,” said Garcia.

Online tools like ChatGPT and AI can be very useful for students. Though the Office of Student Conduct sees a lot of instances of students going too far with these resources.

Academic dishonesty reports are handled by the Office of the Provost. If a student has a prior conduct history for academic dishonesty or does not correspond with their faculty member, these cases are then forwarded to the Office of Student Conduct.
Why It Matters: Students need to stay updated on the policies and process in place regarding academic dishonesty. Not adhering to these regulations can have serious consequences.
