As finals season approaches, stressful exams, papers and projects start to pile up. On-campus academic resources like Academic Success Centers are often overlooked and students usually wait too long to use them.
At Georgia Southern, the Academic Success Center (ASC) provides “holistic support for students throughout their academic journey, ensuring they have the resources and guidance needed to succeed academically,” according to Jessica Williamson, Assistant Vice President for Student Success & Academic Support Services.
Williamson advises students to engage with the ASC’s programs “early and regularly,” but reminds students they can always “schedule or drop- in for tutoring sessions, talk with a staff member about their upcoming exam schedule and plan out a robust study strategy, participate in the events and workshops, or simply drop by for some expert words of encouragement.”
The center provides workshops and consultations meant to develop academic skills, academic success coaching, and proctored testing services. The center also currently offers peer tutoring, though the Peer Mentoring Program will be discontinued after the Spring 2024 semester, as the ASC will shift to develop and introduce new initiatives.
The following are events and workshops being held by the ASC:

To better prepare for finals, Williamson also advises students to:
- Create a study schedule and strategy, add exam dates to your calendar and set an alarm if needed
- Visit faculty office hours for clarification on material
- Form study groups with classmates or visit tutoring centers now
- Review lecture notes regularly: Don’t wait until finals week to go through all your notes
- Regularly revisit your lecture notes, which help in better retention and reduce the amount of time needed for preparation during finals.
- Don’t forget to take breaks when studying. Regular breaks can rest your mind, which can improve concentration and productivity
