Georgia Southern University opened the dining hall on campus to the community free of charge.
After Hurricane Helene, many Statesboro residents were left without electricity, some even had no running water. From September 30 to October 6, classes were canceled for students but the dining hall on campus welcomed students and families providing support to those affected by the storm
“A lot of grocery stores are pretty much empty, gas is doing bad, so this was a good way to like bring people together and kind of give a little community essence,” student Victoria Resto said.
The busiest time for the dining hall was 4 P.M. to 6 P.M. staff and student helped make the process easier for the community. Lines were long and very few seats were available. Dining services prepared an abundance of food ensuring everyone had access to a hot meal.
“I think it’s important because during the hurricane people power went out, so their food has gone bad, and stuff is closing, and people really don’t have anywhere to eat,” student Inya Waller said.
Classes at Georgia Southern resumed on Monday, October 7.
