With October not even halfway through, we have seen some killer films come out this Halloween season, and others are just over the horizon.
Speak No Evil
To start off, Speak No Evil premiered on Oct 1st, a remake of a Danish-Dutch co-production film of the same name from 2022. The film starred James McAvoy, always a good sign when it comes to actors with creep factor, as the patriarch of a British family who invites an American family to visit them on their secluded farmhouse. There, he begins to test the limits of the family’s sanity, and mayhem ensues.
With star performances by McAvoy and the rest of the cast, the movie has a Rotten Tomatoes critic score of 83%. While not being a cultural juggernaut, this film definitely did its job well in giving us a great start to the Halloween season.
Terrifier 3
In more recent releases, Terrifier 3 is the third entry in the Terrifier series, which has made a name for itself as the peak of schlocky, blood-soaked, genuinely insane slashers not seen since the likes of Rob Zombie.
Terrifier 3 follows up on the story from Terrifier 2, with main character Sienna Shaw trying to rebuild her life as Art The Clown (the newest in a long line of iconic slasher villains) along her with new partner, Victoria Heyes, who has gone from standard final girl in the first film to disfigured villainess over the course of this franchise. All of this is set over the backdrop of Christmas, and knowing these movies there will be alot more red decorations than green ones.
Terrifier 2 was the peak of the franchise so far, both critically and commercially. The film doesn’t take the critical crown however, but note was made of both the leading ladies performances in the film.
Upcoming Horror Movies This Month
In just four days we will have Smile 2, the sequel to the incredibly successful film Smile. This film will follow a pop star as they must face the grinning evils of the first film. There is also a double whammy Oct. 25th with both All You Need Is Blood, a story about a amatuer filmaker using his undead dad as his new zombie movie, and Your Monster starring Melissa Barrera from the new Scream films (highly recommend you watch those).
Although not coming out in October, the main event horror film of the year, and the one I am personally the most excited about, is Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, which will come to theaters this Christmas. Honestly, I can’t think of a better Christmas present. With all that being said, we have a great horror movie season ahead of us, and it is always great to remember how amazing this season can and has been. Happy Halloween everyone!
