What is Denim Day?
Denim Day (Why Denim? — Denim Day) is an international event that will take place this year on April 30th to raise awareness about sexual violence and support survivors. The annual campaign began after the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction on the basis that the survivor was wearing tight jeans and must have helped her rapist by removing them, implying consent. In protest, the women of the Italian Parliament wore jeans the next day to work. Today, the campaign continues, encouraging people to wear denim on denim day to stand in solidarity with survivors, challenge victim blaming, and promote conversations about consent and sexual violence prevention.
The Contest
The Office of Student Wellness & Health Promotion, in partnership with the University Bookstore, is holding a T-shirt Design contest open to all students currently enrolled at Georgia Southern and East Georgia State College. Students have until 11:59pm on February 2nd to submit up to two original designs for the contest. The winner, to be announced on March 10th, will receive a certificate, free t-shirt, and be honored on social media and publicity related to the shirt design.
