Last tuesday, Georgia Southern was hit with an unexpected wave of snow that took the campus by storm.
Classes were moved to online learning for the week and roads were mostly covered by ice and snow. With the sudden change in weather, students decided to have an impromptu snow-cation that led to memories made and lots of fun.
Although fun is different for everyone, the students on the Armstrong campus spent their time off enjoying it.
Wesley Melton: “I’m from South Georgia, so we really don’t see the sea snow ever. We’ve always had speculations of, oh, it’s gonna snow. Right before the snowstorm hit, I went over to my friend’s house, which is 15 minutes down the road. We stayed up till, I think, three o’clock in the morning, waiting for it to snow. Right at midnight, we started walking, and that’s when it was, like, kind of snowing, but on more, like sleet or hail. Then right around 1:30am, it really started snowing and started sticking, and like, we felt like little kids, we were playing. We were throwing snowballs. We’re making snow angels. We were taking so many videos, like we couldn’t go inside, just because of how magical the moment was.”
Sara Ward: “I did have a lot of fun when it was actually snowing. I didn’t go out because it was icy for a lot of it. And then it was kind of disappointing, because I woke up and it was there, and I was like, oh, I missed it, but it was really fun because I got to have one last snowball fight with my brother and my dad, because I don’t think that was ever gonna happen again moving down here. So that was really special. But after that, it got a little crazy, you know, staying inside, and the ice kept melting and freezing again.”
Sito McMillan: “I honestly thought the snow wasn’t going to last long, because in the past, they really hyped it up a lot, and it’s usually like a little sprinkle and just gone. It’s gone. But yeah, it lasted like a couple days. It was crazy and fun…I honestly stayed inside. I did see a lot of people in my neighborhood going out and sledding and stuff. It was really cool but I played video games because my parents and I are from Canada. My mom’s from Canada, so I go up there and see snow all the time.”
Kiaya Cobb: “When it first began to snow, I had went outside, waited and watched, and then once we realized it was just ice, we kind of went inside, had hot chocolate, and then later on, at about three ish, I went outside alone because it was completely covered in snow, and I went around campus, took pictures, and it was just fun. And then the next day, we all went out and made snowmen, had snowball fights, and all of that sort of stuff. Afterwards, I realized that those days were supposed to not be play days or anything like that, and that we still had to do the work. So coming back, I was really stressed and had back to back to back assignments and chemistry and English 1102, work due. And I was all like, oh, just jump right back into it, full speed.”
