February is known for being Black History Month and the energy is undeniable to ignore! Its origin traces back to Dr Carter G. Woodson, a scholar whose dedication and contributions to spotlighting black heritage, success, and accomplishments, led him to start “Negro History Week” in 1926, which was later expanded to Black History Month in 1976. He fervently believed that all Americans had overlooked the achievements of black Americans for centuries including those from their community. He encouraged everyone to take pride in their heritage, as it is a gift no one can take away.
Today, Dr Carter G. Woodson’s legacy Black History Month lives on and beyond historical events that built a strong foundation for the modern world, this month cherishes art, culture, music, movies, and most importantly identity. From paintings to literature, and jazz to hip-hop, black lives have, without a doubt, given the world imperishable changes that have and will always impact others.
Black History Month calls for action, serving as a catalyst for activism and change. Every day we are reminded about systematic racism, inequality, hatred, and the need for change. This challenges us to reflect, on how we can contribute to a more just society.
