The Country Wife, a classical comedy put on by the Georgia Southern Theatre Program, is running from April 10-12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center and will be the last official production put on by the Theatre Program for the school year.
The Country Wife is a Restoration-era comedy and was controversial at the time for its lewd subject matter and contents. This included various risque sex jokes and plot elements, including the arrival of a new young “country wife” into the decadent town of London, and one of the main characters, Horner, claiming impotence to get with men’s wives.
One of the main highlights of the play, according to Stage Manager Noah Checketts, is the costume design of the play, with a highlight being the outfit of the character Sparkish, played by Thomas Schneider.
“Sparkish’s outfit is fantastic, but I don’t want to say too much about it. I want people to get to experience it, because it’s lovely. All of the costumes are fantastic, Sparkish’s is just over the top.”
The cast has said that they have loved getting to put on this play in particular and that they have really connected with the characters and the time period the play seeks to parody and mock.
“I think it is like old school, but I feel like we found ways to make it more modern to ourselves, and that way it’s a bit more easy to connect to and have fun with,” Schneider said.
Overall, the production seems to be a raucous and risque evening in the halls of Restoration-era London, with many laugh-out-loud jokes that will be enjoyed by a more dirty-minded audience and a great evening show to go to after a long week of classes.
