This week’s snowstorm forced our University and several businesses to shut down due to hazardous road conditions. Many students celebrated their free time and enjoyed the rare winter wonderland around them. The snow provided adequate entertainment during the two day ‘break’, but what else can students do while they’re at home or in their dorms while virtual learning?
Here is a list of ways to spend your free time when you’re between online classroom meetings or assignments.
Read a book
From Shakespeare to current popular literature, there are several literary works to read. You could spend your time getting lost in the world of thriller, sci-fi, horror, classics, romance, fantasy or even the popular but slightly controversial mix of genres, romantasy!
Binge-watch one of your favorite shows
There are many shows to watch on several streaming services. Here are my best Netflix recommendations.
If you are into romantic comedies, the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before spin-off series, XO Kitty, on Netflix is ranked number two on their list of the 10 best TV shows in the U.S.
If you are into horror or thriller shows, season two of Squid Game has reached number four on that list.
If you love a TV Drama series with a pinch of melancholy, The Queen’s Gambit has been labeled “most liked” by viewers.
If Netflix’s originals do not pique your interest, you could also watch the adult animation action series Arcane, which has won an Emmy award for being popular amongst anime and animation lovers.
Play a video game
If you are into video games, there are many to choose from while you are at home. People who enjoy open world role playing games could play Wuthering Waves, which is available on Android, IOS, Playstation and Windows devices. Fashion lovers could play Dress To Impress on Roblox, which has gained the popularity of over 4 billion visits. If you enjoy first-person shooter games, Overwatch may be the perfect game for you.
Work out
You could clear your mind by working out after a long day. It is often assumed that working out mainly involves doing push-ups, sit-ups or weight lifting. However, simply stretching or dancing to music in your house would count! You could even exercise with the popular Nintendo game Just Dance, which recently launched a 2025 edition featuring popular songs that’ll make you forget you’re working out!
Hang out with your family
You could use your time indoors to bond with family members. You could sit down with each other and talk about your week, friends, struggles and even perspectives on life. Communication is the key to healthy relationships, including your family.
Test out your artistic abilities
If you are someone with a big imagination, are there any dream projects you wish to one day complete? Would you like to have your own tv show, comic, art exhibit or even album one day? Using your free time indoors is a great way to start working to achieve that goal!
