Students for Human Rights held their first meeting this Tuesday, marking the start of a unique organization on the Georgia Southern campus.
Students for Human Rights is a group that seeks to advocate for human rights on campus through promotion and participation in protests and other forms of activism. The whole club votes on policies and rules within the club that affect things such as the code of conduct for the club members and meetings and what events they should undertake.
According to Club Treasurer Hannah Trosper, they plan on organizing multiple events such as panels and information sessions on human rights crises. Upcoming events include a panel discussion about immigration rights next week and a Valentine’s Day fundraiser on Feb. 11, where people can buy candy grams for their partner and support the organization.
The membership fee is $10 every semester, with the money going towards speakers, trips to protests or other events, and other expenses voted on by the club. All meetings take place every Tuesday at 6:30 pm in Carroll Building Room 2229.
Lila West, President, stated to those thinking of joining the group, “We need the world to change, and the only way for that to happen is through the students, and through education.”
