It’s official! There are over 30,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies back in Bulloch County.
You can snag a box of cookies outside of Russell Union from Feb. 17 to Feb. 19. By purchasing a box of cookies, you’re not just treating yourself, you’re treating the community.
When you purchase a box of cookies, you’re helping the Girl Scouts of Bulloch County with their fundraising efforts. According to Katie Christmas, a Girl Scouts Service Unit Manager, the proceeds go to funding the troop’s activities such as, “covering membership fees, doing service projects, and hosting fun events like pool parties.” It also covers the cost of badges, materials, and uniforms.
These cookie sales are an important fundraiser that allows the Girl Scout troops to be self-sustaining and fund the various initiatives they want to undertake. Some initiatives include donating to the Humane Society and the food bank, according to Christmas. The Girl Scouts also take up service projects. “We’ve done things like planted flowers at the Open Hearts community mission, so we will use those funds to do nice things for the people in the community,” she said.
“Cookie season is always a really busy time for us, but the girls love it and learn so much. They love working at our booths, and it’s a great opportunity to practice their math, leadership, and people skills,” said Whitney Lavoie, Co-Leader of Troop 30209 in Statesboro. “I’m so thankful for our troop families, friends, and the community during our cookie season. We’re really proud of all the ways we’re helping these girls grow and learn, and we couldn’t do it without our cookie sales.”
Fun Fact:
There are only two Girl Scout Cookie bakeries in the U.S. These two bakeries are called Little Brownie Bakers, and ABC Bakers. If you look at the bottom of a cookie box, It will show you where it came from. Typically, Statesboro gets its cookies from Little Brownie Bakers. So what we’d call Samoas, ABC Bakers call them Caramel Delights. “They are the same cookie, just a different name,” Christmas explained.
