October 24, 2019
The Georgia Southern men’s soccer team had their final non-conference game of the season where they tied with Winthrop on Tuesday, 1-1, in their second tie of the season.
Winthrop fell to 4-9-1 with the tie and was led by senior forward Marc Carreras who had a goal and 5 shots. Winthrop as a team had 15 shots total, while having 8 saves total from both of their goalkeepers.
This being the first of two games on the week, GS were led by senior defender Aldair Cortes who had the lone goal early in the first half.
GS went up 1-0 before the halftime break but gave up the lead after a goal by Winthrop in the 68th minute.
In the first overtime period, Winthrop had a chance to win the game but GS goalkeeper Jose Eduardo Bomfim had back to back key saves. Bomfim finished the game with six saves total, his fourth straight game of five or more saves.
The Eagles had a 6-3 advantage in shots in the first overtime, and a 4-0 advantage in the second overtime but neither team was able to find the net during the extra time.
“You don’t need a double overtime game in midweek,” Head Coach John Murphy said. “But I think there’s lots of positives that we can draw from it. I thought Jose’s save in overtime was a very difficult thing to do against their top player on the day.
The Eagles will look to improve to 7-6-2 on Saturday when they take on Howard University on the road, is also looking to improve to 7-6-2.
