October 1, 2012
Georgia Southern University administration members are extremely pleased that 55 percent of the student population participated in the voting process for possible future fees.
“I am ecstatic about the number of students who have participated in this vote. It’s a record for this university and it may be a record in Georgia. This percentage is higher than those who usually vote in a presidential election in this country,” Patrice Jackson, dean of students, said.
9,390 students voted last Monday thru Wednesday through their Wings account.
Sustainability fee
74.7 percent (7,018) of students voted yes to the $10 green fee in support of sustainability on campus.
25.3 percent (2,372) of students voted no.
Athletic Expansion fee
70.4 percent (6,612) of students voted yes to the $25 fee for the expansion of Paulson stadium.
29.6 percent (2,778) of students voted no.
Athletic Operations fee
61.2 percent (5,748) of students voted yes to the $75 FBS fee, which will not be implemented until the school has received an invitation to move up.

Jeff Monken, head coach of the GSU football team, said, “I think the vote in general is a historic point in Georgia Southern University, to give our students the chance to vote on student fees.”
