During Georgia Southern’s impromptu break due to Hurricane Dorian, the volleyball team’s schedule was rearranged.

The Bash at the Beach by Marriott Invitational was canceled, and the team played USC Upstate on the road instead on Saturday.

The team successfully bounced back from two back-to-back losses in the latter half of the Mercer Bears Classic against Mercer and Nicholls State.

“I’m really proud of our team today for the effort to come on the road and earn a win,” Head Coach Chad Willis said. “The change in schedule this week forced us to switch up our process going into a single-match weekend, but I think our staff and players did a great job of preparing and focusing on our controllables, which ultimately put us in a position to come away with the win.”

GS took down the Spartans 3-0 behind a strong game from freshman right side hitter Mya Wilson and sophomore outside hitter Maddie Bryant. Wilson led the match with 13 kills and three digs, while Bryant followed closely behind with 11 kills and two blocks.

The Spartans took an early lead in the first set, where GS was outscored 12-10 in kills.

After an offensive shift, the Eagles took control of the game and ended the match with a .239 percentage, compared to Upstate’s .145.

The Eagle defense was led by junior libero Landon Jones, who posted 17 digs. She has accumulated at least 10 digs in each match this season. Sophomore setter Madison Brown had four digs and 35 assists.

“We had some really nice individual performances out there this afternoon,” Willis said. “I love the energy our bench brings. Going on the road anywhere and winning is tough, but they do a fantastic job of keeping us focused and engaged for the entire match.”

With this victory, the team improves to 2-2. They will play host to three other teams this weekend in the Georgia Southern Invitational, where they will take on UNC Asheville, Southern Miss and Winthrop.
