STATESBORO — Georgia Southern Athletic Director Tom Kleinlein faced the media Friday to talk the two arrests made to GS football players in the past week. 

Kleinlein again talked about how quarterback Shai Werts’ cocaine charge was dropped and that Werts was clear of any punishment.

Then a question was asked about if Kleinlein had talked to defensive end Quan Griffin about his arrest or had any updates.

“That’s a pretty serious situation,” Kleinlein said. “That’s a situation where I’m not going to be able to talk to the individual because he’s still in an incarceration situation.”

Griffin was arrested and charged with battery, aggravated battery, weapon offense, damaging property, burglary, larceny, robbery and obstructing justice last Thursday morning. Per the arrest report, Griffin allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home and assaulted a man who police suspected to be her new boyfriend.

Kleinlein spoke to that.

“In today’s world, we here at this university and in our football program, we talk every single day about our responsibilities and how to do things right,” Kleinlein said. “We emphasise relationships and having healthy relationships with people and the right and wrong. Unfortunately, sometimes things happen.”

As of Friday afternoon, Griffin is still in the Bradford County Jail and his bond is set for $345,000.

“This is a young man who is still going through a legal process so I can’t comment on much,” Kleinlein said. “When I can talk to this young man, I want to hear his side of the story and we’ll evaluate that when we get to it.”
