Reported rape at Southern Pines under investigation

STATESBORO — Georgia Southern University Criminal Investigations Division is investigating a reported on-campus rape that occurred at Southern Pines university housing reported on Sunday morning.

According to the GS Crime and Fire Log, the rape incident occurred between 2:30 a.m. and 5 a.m and was reported at 8:49 a.m. 

Officer William McCurdy responded at 9:07 a.m to the reported sexual assault. After speaking with the victim, McCurdy transported her to the Statesboro Regional Sexual Assault and Child Advocacy Center, better known as The Teal House.

Officer Haley Shutley and Lieutenant Riner transported the victim to the police department and conducted an interview at approximately 2:30 p.m.

After the interview with the victim, Shutley and Riner began collecting evidence. 

“The evidence that was obtained includes: one (1) black/white comforter, two (2) teal bed sheets, two (2) used condoms, and two (2) magnum condom wrappers,” according to the police report by Shutley.

The victim also turned the clothes that she was wearing during the incident to officers.

A witness was then called in to be interviewed by Riner in reference to the rape. Officers remained on guard outside the apartment throughout the investigation.
