Nigeria Independence Day is celebrated on October 1st. They gained their independence in 1960 from the British. When celebrating, they “enjoy [their] life with loved ones and not have a big celebration” said Sanusi Hamed.

During this event, Nigerian students gave out cookies with fun facts about Nigeria and played Nigerian music.

Usually, Nigerians are out of school on their independence day. Mercy Okonna stated that “If it falls on a weekend, then they let us have that Monday off.”

Sanusi Hamed answered a question about an update on the #EndSars Movement saying, “We didn’t celebrate the independence day the way we wanted to there was a lot of stuff happening like the shooting [and] the killing. Before I left Nigeria, they banned the SARS people, and they placed a new one called SWAT (Special Weapon Tactical Team). The SWAT do the same thing as the SARS, but the killing has reduced. I think people in Nigeria is still not happy, but today is really about the memory of what happened last year.”
