Over the course of the weekend women’s and men’s soccer both played on the road, but only women’s soccer was able to pull out a win.

Women’s soccer

The Eagles started off their weekend taking a big 7-2 win over the War Hawks. The first goal was scored by senior defender Ashton Adams off of a corner kick, and from there the Eagles didn’t stop their momentum as they scored two more times in the first half and four times in the second half.

Sophomore Maddie Klintworth and junior Frida Brattum both had an impressive game, scoring two goals each. 

Overall the Eagles had the edge on ULM with shots, 24-11 and walked away with a victory to make their record 4-6 as they headed to face South Alabama.

The Eagles weren’t as victorious in Alabama while GS was shut out 0-2 by the Jaguars.

USA handed the Eagles their seventh loss of the season by delivering two goals, one in each half. The Jaguars also outshot the Eagles 30-12, having 10 shots in the first half and 20 shots in the second.

Despite the loss, redshirt senior goalkeeper Jocelyn Springer notched 12 impressive saves from the game.

“Having to play a team who rested on Friday night is a tough task on the road (they cancelled their game with Troy because the field was too wet). Nevertheless, it’s on us to overcome adversity, and find a way to battle through,” head coach Brian Dunleavy told gseagles. “Nothing is going to be perfect, and teams that find a way to fight through have success. That’s what our team needs to do a better job with.”

The Eagles will be back in action in Statesboro to take on Troy Friday, Oct. 5 at 7:00 p.m.

Men’s soccer

The Eagles fell 1-3 to Mercer on Saturday, Sept. 29 in Macon making the Eagles record now 3-4-1.

The Bears started off strong, scoring in the first 18 minutes of the game and then again just four minutes later to give them a 2-0 lead on GS.

GS battled back until the end as senior forward Javier Carbonell logged his 10^th goal of the season in the 84^th minute of the game after taking a shot off a ball sent into the box by a connection of passes between freshman Samuel Mayer and senior Sebastian Gregerson.

The Eagles fought for the equalizer, but the Bears were able to put up one last goal to seal the win in the 89^th minute of play.

Overall the Eagles had the edge over Mercer in shots 17-10, but the Bears were able to pull the win over the Eagles. 

“We were second-best all night,” Georgia Southern Head Coach John Murphy said to gseagles. “The late goal just papered over the cracks of a poor team performance. Mercer out-worked us for all but 10 minutes of the match, and that is unacceptable around here. I’m not sure exactly why we are in the current malaise we are in, but it better change, and change quickly.”

The Eagles look to break their two-loss slump at home as they take on FAU Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 7:00 p.m.
