The Georgia Southern Eagles fell just 4 points shy of a win against Texas State. The Eagles fell to 10-5 overall and 1-2 in the Sun Belt.

Texas state player Da’Nasia Hood scored a career-high of 32 points to lead Texas State to a 78-74 Sun Belt Conference victory over host Georgia Southern on Thursday evening at Hanner Fieldhouse.

“We tried to keep a body on here, but it seemed she hit everything that went up. That was tough to guard,” said Eagles head coach Anita Howard.

After scoring the first points of the game, Terren Ward helped the Eagles to keep a short lead, but they then started to struggle in the first quarter while Texas took control of the game leading by 13. 

The Eagles started to pick back up in the 2nd quarter cutting Texas states lead to just 2 during the last few minutes of the first half. Hood then helped to bring Texas’ lead back up while getting half of her overall points in the first half. 

“The ball was not on our side offensively, but like I told our young ladies in the huddles, we had to get stops,” said Howard. 

During the second half of the game Texas went on a scoring drought allowing the Eagles to bring themselves within just 3 points towards the end of the 4th quarter. Terren Ward had the highest number of points, 23, while Mya Burns had 11 points. 

The Eagles were not able to make a final goal in order to win the game or bring it into overtime resulting in a 4 point loss to Texas state. 

“This one stung for the players. But now we have to focus on a well-coached UTA team. The good thing is, we have a game on Saturday, and it’s in Hanner.”

The Eagles will play at Hanner again this Saturday against UT Arlington at 2 p.m.
