SGA Senate Scramble

SGA is holding elections for various positions including the office of President and the Cabinet along with various Senate positions for all colleges on the Statesboro and Armstrong campuses. Polls will close Wednesday, March 27th at 11:59 pm. The George-Anne contacted all of the candidates in contested races. Everyone on this list is running for a Senate position.

 

College of Engineering & Computing 

Julius Adeyera, is an Advanced Manufacturing Engineering graduate student, running to ensure that students are more involved in the COEC. As the President of the Nigerian-Student Association, Adeyera says he has the leadership experience to work effectively with students, administrators, and other organizers to “Contribute to positive changes within our college community.”

 

Adeyera also wants students to become more aware of sustainability initiatives, be conscious about the environment, reduce waste, and promote efficiency. 

 

Winnie Mwangi, a junior majoring in Mechanical Engineering, is running on a platform to represent student voices and effect positive change. Mwangi is a Kenyan-American, on the Executive Board for the National Society of Black Engineers. 

 

Mwangi credits the Engineering department with diverse ideas that can be used to better the school, and wants all students to “speak their mind so we can fix things and have advancements.” 

 

Adetunji Adewoye and Bennett Akpomedaye did not respond to the George-Anne’s requests for an interview or further information about their respective campaigns

 

College of Behavioral & Social Sciences

 

Alexis Smith, a sophomore majoring in Psychology, is running for the SGA senate to promote “Academic success, professional success and individual success for the campus as a whole.” 

Smith wants to provide better academic resources to students who don’t know where to find them, and individualized resources for students who see problems on campus. 

 

Benjamin Mincey, a junior majoring in International Studies is running for re-election as a senator for the College of Behavior and Social Sciences. Mincey has promised to “Protect free speech and represent the students on all three campuses at this great institution who may not always feel they have a voice.” 

 

According to Mincey, “I feel that the main thing that separates me from the rest of the field of candidates is the fact I will always advocate for what is right, even if it is not the popular thing to do.” 

 

Keirra Ruth, a freshman majoring in Interior Design is running for the SGA Senate to “Make this institution far greater and better as a young woman.”

 

Ruth describes herself as an open-minded individual, who is a listener and team player. She is looking to “Connect with the students on campus and be able to give resources to them as well as myself so we all can succeed not only in college but be prepared for life outside of college as well.”

 

Weston Calhoun, is attending Georgia Southern’s campus in Wexford, Ireland and was unable to meet for an interview.

 

College of Science & Mathematics

 

Jolie Kallio, is a sophomore Biology major from the Armstrong campus. When asked about her plans to advocate for students, she responded: “I would have a few seminars geared specifically towards women…women who are in STEM majors.” 

 

With STEM being a historically male-dominated field, Kallio wants to ensure that women in STEM majors don’t leave “Because of the stereotypes.” 

 

Kallio also plans to hold seminars to decrease stress and burnout for STEM majors. 

 

Hailey Chen, of the Armstrong Campus did not respond to the George-Anne’s requests for an interview or further information about her campaign.
