Welcome back Eagles! Our Inkwell staff hopes you had a relaxing and enjoyable summer. We are happy to be back in the newsroom creating content for the Armstrong campus.
Here are stories that we have our eye on for the upcoming semester.
Campus protests related to the Israel-Palestine conflict
During the last week of the previous semester, protests were held on both campuses involving the current conflict between Israel and Palestine. The protests were organized by Savannah for Palestine and Georgia Southern students. Organizers stated that they plan to hold more protests throughout the fall semester.
Campus sit-ins for LGBTQIA+ visibility
Student-organized sit-ins took place last April following the removal of LGBTQIA+ resources on Georgia Southern’s website. Students provided a list of demands from the university, including an apology from President Marrero and restoration of the information previously placed on the university’s website.
Dental school coming to Armstrong
President Marrero confirmed last semester that Georgia Southern’s Armstrong campus will serve as the host school for Augusta University’s Dental College. The first students will be enrolled this fall, according to a university press release. $178 million will be allocated to construct the building and make renovations to current facilities.
Advising Improvements
Last year’s student satisfaction survey showed that advising was the main area of frustration for students. In an attempt to improve advising, the university is implementing the Enrollment, Marketing and Student Success Division. The advising department also underwent a name change and is now called the Center for Advising, Retention and Completion. Operational changes are going to be made in hopes of improving students’ experience.
