Some Georgia Southern students and residents living at The Vault apartments could lose their home after the city of Statesboro threatened to condemn one of the apartment buildings in the off-campus complex.
According to students who live in apartment building 1100, located at 1699 Statesboro Pl Cir, a letter (attached below) was taped on apartment doors Tuesday notifying residents that “due to unforeseen circumstances, the building has been deemed unsafe for habitation and could be condemned within 30 days.”
The letter also explains that residents have the “option to terminate your lease without penalty”, and are encouraged to “consider this option.”
The letter goes on to say “we will do our utmost to assist residents in finding alternative housing. However, please be advised that our capacity to relocate residents is limited, and we may not be able to accommodate everyone.”

The Vault’s letter comes in response to an official notice regarding the safety of the building from the city’s Chief Building Official Robbie Jordan.
Less than a week ago, residents found a printed version of an email taped to their door (attached below). The email is dated September 18, 2024 and addressed to “[email protected]”.

In the letter, Jordan stated the building is “dangerous to the life, health, property, and safety of the occupants due to the building’s apparent structural condition and the blockade of the means of ingress and egress by scaffolding”.
Jordan goes on to say, “unless this building is deemed safe by a structural engineer and that the means of ingress and egress is cleared within thirty days of receipt of this notice… all residents [will need to] vacate the premise.”
The Vault is not managed under University Housing. Regardless, Georgia Southern University Housing and the Dean of Students Office are responding in a joint statement that reads,
“Georgia Southern University Housing and the Dean of Students Office have resources available to assist students who are affected by this disruption at the Vault. The owners and staff were aware of the property condition but continued to fill the spaces with college students who are facing overcrowding with student housing. The staff were unwilling to discuss and address concerns on move in day and came across as if the new tenants ( college students and parents) were bothersome with the concerns. If only the property managers used the best practices to treat the young tenants with the same respect and consideration they would want for their own personal safety, experience and livelihood. This is a an unfortunate example of how self centered the world has come.
