Calling all gamers! The Virtual Collaboration Center is set to open at the start of the spring 2025 semester.
The VCC will take over the space of what used to be the Gus Mart in the Student Union. Construction will begin on Oct. 24.
Associate Vice President for Student Success Dr. Melanie Miller said the VCC is apart of a larger effort to make the Student Union and Memorial College Center a more “engaging” space for students.
“The Armstrong Student Union is not a very engaging space right now it terms of activities and things going on for students” Dr. Miller said. “So we really felt like we needed something to give it some more energy in that space” for both current and potential students touring the campus.
Dr. Miller said this project has been in talks for nearly 6 years, which is around the time consolidation happened.
Armstrong’s VCC “will be a mini version” of Statesboro’s VCC. The space will offer e-sports gaming machines, PC gaming consoles and board games, according to Dr. Miller.
It does not cost money to game in the collaborative spaces, but fees are required for some features of the center. Purchase of a gamepass will be required for certain PC usage. Students will also have to pay a reservation fee for parties of ten or more people.
Dr. Miller mentioned a few other upcoming changes to the Student Union, including a selfie station outside of the bookstore, renovated carpet and furniture, an information center replacing The Perk and study spaces.
