The Oscar Nominations were announced last Thursday, with many of the best movies of the year being showcased to the public by the academy, and with some lesser-known films taking the spotlight.
The one film getting the most love is Emilia Pérez, with 13 nominations being given, including Best Picture, Best Director Jacques Audiard, Best Actress in a Lead Role for Karla Sofía Gascón, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Zoe Saldaña. The film is a musical crime comedy that follows a Mexican cartel leader who hires a lawyer to help her disappear so that she can transition into a woman. It also stars Selena Gomez, who plays the US-raised wife of the Mexican cartel leader.
The film is a landmark in many ways, with it now holding the record for most nominations held for a non-English-language film, with the record previously being held by two movies, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Roma. Its leading star Gascón is also the first openly trans woman to be nominated for the category according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The runner-ups for most nominations are The Brutalist and Wicked, with both films having 10 nominations each, including Best Picture for both films. Some other films worth shouting out would be The Substance, which while having a Best Picture nomination also gives Demi Moore, star of classics including St. Elmos Fire and A Few Good Men, her first Best Actress nomination of her career.
While the Oscars have been hindered by the Los Angeles wildfires that have been raging since Jan. 8, the academy has assured the public that the show will go on and that the show will honor Los Angeles and the current wildfire crisis. The academy has also already donated to the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s wildfire relief efforts, including the $250,000 that it would’ve spent on the Oscar nominees luncheon, which was canceled.
